The festive week of Durga Puja is here. But the usual celebrations are missing this year as the COVID-19 pandemic has dampened the spirit of community celebrations. Because of the restrictions on the number of people gathering for public events, most of the celebrations have now moved to virtual platforms.  Kolkata’s century-old puja pandal has followed suit and has decided to go virtual this year. Have a look at how they are celebrating this year’s Durgotsav

High Court has recently directed that all Durga puja pandals in the state of West Bengal are mandated as “no-entry zones”. With the number of covid cases increasing daily, several Durga puja pandal committees have decided to go for virtual pandal-hopping, and Kolkata’s century-old puja pandal, Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal is one of them.

In Kolkata, pandal hopping is incomplete unless you pay a visit to this century-old Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal. The pandal is located in North Kolkata and used to be the hub of armed revolutionary groups like “Anusilan Samity” in the pre-independent era. As per several historical reports, it is believed that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose used to be associated with this puja pandal as well. The idol of Durga at Bagbazar is traditional and popularly called “Ek Chala” which also has a single backdrop or “Chalchitra“.

The Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durga Pooja is usually held with huge grandeur and devotion for three days, which are Saptami, Ashtami and Navami. On the day of Ashtami, the Birashtami Utsav is organised, followed by Sandhi Pujo. It is believed that the Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durgostav was the first Puja of Calcutta organised by the people communally and not conducted inside any zamindar’s home, as was once the custom.

Besides this, some of the other virtual Durga Pooja events which are going to happen this year are College Square Puja, Kolkata, Keshtopur Prafulla Kanan Puja, Kolkata, AK Block Durga puja committee in Salt Lake and Abasar Puja pandal, Kolkata.
