The Power, a crime thriller film, directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, premiered on ZEE5 on 11 February. The film stars Vidyut Jamwal, Shruti Haasan and Mahesh Manjrekar in the lead roles, while Prateik Babbar and Sachin Khedekar play the antagonists. The Power is partially inspired by The Godfather, showing a different take on the Hollywood classic. The film also has three subtle references to Bollywood, which are hard to spot. Read on to know about it. (Warning: Spoilers Ahead).

The Power tells the story of a family, the Thakurs, who are the heads of a mafia empire. Vidyut Jamwal, in the film, stars as Devidas Thakur, the younger son of the family, who had no aims to join the crime business, but an assassination attempt on his father, makes him get involved. He is in love with Parveen (Shruti Haasan), the daughter of his father’s closest aide, Anwar (Zakir Hussain).

When Anwar gets killed by Ranjeet (Prateik Babbar), the son-in-law of the Thakurs, after putting false accusations on him, Parveen breaks up with Devidas and vows revenge. She then marries the son of the rival and enemy of the Thakurs, Rana (Sachin Khedekar). The son’s name is Bobby. In their wedding ceremony, to get Bobby away from Parveen for a few moments, Rana calls him, and says, “Bobby, what are you doing here? Go there, Sunny is alone, give him company.” This dialogue gives us the first easter egg, referencing the Deol brothers, Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol.

The second easter egg comes much sooner. After being separated from Parveen, Devidas meets a woman, who has a big crush on him. Her name is Chandni (Sonal Chauhan), who is an actress. Soon their romantic relationship begins, which makes Parveen jealous. Hence, we see a love triangle of Parveen, Devidas, and Chandni. If the names did not strike a chord, this is a reference to the legendary love and heartbreak story of Devdas, his two lovers being Paro and Chanda (or Chandramukhi). When Chandni dies in an accident in the film, Devidas even yells out ‘Chanda’, and not ‘Chandni’.

The third easter egg comes at a much serious and tragic time. When Ranjeet (Prateik Babbar) is getting his revenge against Ramdas (Jisshu Sengupta), he brings out a chainsaw, and says, “How many times have you hit me with these hands of yours? Your arms are too active, aren’t they?

At this moment, if one remembers that the Ramdas’ surname is Thakur, they would surely expect Ranjeet to quote Gabbar Singh from Sholay: “Bahut jaan hain, inn haathon mein. Kya kahaa tha? Yeh haath nahin, phaansi ka phanda hai? Yeh haath mujhe de de, THAKUR!

However, they kept the reference subtle and let it be an easter egg, not quoting any exact words. Also, it helped in breaking the tension of the psychotic and tragic moment before Ranjeet cuts of Ramdas’ hand and massacres him.
