Uttar Pradesh: Crimes Against Women On A Worrying Rise
Three rape cases have been reported in the state since last week.
The rising number of crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh are pointing towards a worryingly weak law and order situation in the state. The high number of these crimes is putting the Yogi Adityanath government on the back foot. Three rapes have been reported in the state last week, in the cities of Gorakhpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Hapur. The opposition has since slammed the UP Government, with Congress General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi having said, that the rape cases prove that the government “has completely failed in providing security to women.”
This has put the issue of women’s safety back into focus in India’s most populous state. One of the crimes that have jolted the state has in fact taken place in Gorakhpur, which is called Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s fiefdom. A 17-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped, raped and then inflicted with burn injuries with cigarette butts. In Lakhimpur Kheri, after a 13-year-old girl was raped and murdered, her family alleged that her eyes were gouged out and her tongue, cut out.
