Umar Khalid has been sent to judicial custody by a Delhi court till October 22. A former student of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and an outspoken critic of the Indian Government, Khalid was arrested on September 13 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He has also been named in the long charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police in the Northeast Delhi riots that occurred in the capital this February.

A video message recorded by Khalid prior to his arrest had gone viral on social media a few days ago. In the clip, he spoke about the “false narrative” that had been created against him by editing a speech he gave in Amravati. In the video, Khalid also spoke about the BJP Government’s targeting of those who opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) during the peaceful protests that had erupted in the country earlier this year.
