Tragedy Strikes As Speeding Truck Kills At Least 13 Sleeping Labourers On Surat Footpath

In a tragic incident in the late hours on Tuesday night, at least 18 migrant labourers sleeping on a footpath were run over by a speeding truck in Surat, killing 13 of them instantly. The remaining five, who were rushed to a hospital nearby are said to be in a critical condition.
The accident occurred near the Kosamba village on the outskirts of the city when the driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle when a tractor came in front of it. The police have arrested the main accused and are investigating if he was driving the lorry in an inebriated state. The entire group of labourers came to Gujarat from Rajasthan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter account to condole the tragedy. He wrote that he was extremely saddened by the mishap and offered his condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced an ex-gratia amount of 2 lakh rupees for the deceased victims, while 50,000 rupees will be given to the injured workers.
