Tokyo Olympics: Mary Kom Opens Up On Her Narrow Defeat At Pre-Quarters, Says, “I Thought I Had Won”

On Thursday, Mary Kom’s journey towards bagging the second Olympic medal ended with a defeat. The veteran boxer was saddened after she lost a close fight against Colombian Ingrit Valencia in the pre-quarters.

With Mirabai Chanu bagging a silver medal, the Indian side opened its medal tally on Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics. Since then, the hopes surrounding this Olympics campaign have grown from India’s perspective. And living up to it, the Indian team had a great start on Day 6. While PV Sindhu has advanced into the quarters, the hockey team is gaining momentum in the game. However, a major setback was Mary Kom’s defeat in the pre-quarterfinals by a close margin.

On Thursday, Mary Kom’s journey towards bagging the second Olympic medal ended with a defeat. The veteran boxer was left in disbelief as she lost a close fight against Colombian Ingrit Valencia in the Round Of 16 match. While two judges ruled in favour of Mary Kom, the other two backed the Colombian boxer. And Ingrit was declared the winner of the game by a split decision. This marked her first win out of three attempts against the Indian boxer.

After exiting the boxing ring, Mary Kom was stunned by the final results. She was not aware of having lost the bout. “I was happy inside the ring, when I came out, I was happy because in my mind I thought I had won,” the veteran boxer stated in a press interview. She got to know about the results through social media following the confirmation of her coach Chhote Lal Yadav.

While Mary Kom was utterly disappointed by this close defeat, Twitteratis cheered her up as the “real winner”. Praises showered in for the veteran boxer from all across the nation.

Well, talking about this particular game in detail, Ingrit opened the first round with a fierce lead of 4-1. After being at the back foot, Mary made a great comeback by 3-2 in the second round. However, the final round was the breathtaking one which unfortunately ruled out of Mary’s favour.
