Anti-government protestors organised a unique Harry Potter theme rally in Bangkok, Thailand. This was a part of a larger movement against the military-aligned government of Thailand Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Dressed as Harry Potter and other characters of the popular series, the protestors said that they were going to cast a spell for democracy. Many participants, wearing striped Harry Potter scarves, spoke about the increasing injustices by the government. Calling for curbs in their King, Maha Vajiralongkorn’s powers, the rallyists criticised the palace for undermining democracy.
The Thai monarchy is known to be extremely powerful. If found guilty of criticising the king, the pro-democratic protestors can face up to 15 years of imprisonment.
Harry Potter is the central character of JK Rowling’s magical fantasy books, also turned into massively successful Hollywood movies. According to the rally organizers, this theme was chosen to attract a younger audience and to make them more attentive towards the country’s democracy. The rally was attended by more than 200 people.
