The Home Ministry, in the Rajya Sabha today, said that the controversial Tablighi Jamaat event was responsible for the spread of COVID-19 to ‘many persons,’ among other factors. The Home Ministry said in the Upper House on Monday that the large assembly in a closed premise in Delhi this March “also” caused the spread of coronavirus infection among “many persons.” The religious gathering had taken place with no adherence to laid-down COVID-19 prevention measures and containment protocols.

The Home Ministry was replying to a question from Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai if the Tablighi Jamaat cadres were a major reason for the spread of the disease in Delhi and other states. The Minister of State of Home Affairs, G. Kishan Reddy said, “As reported by Delhi Police, despite guidelines and orders issued by various authorities in pursuance of the outbreak of COVID-19, a huge gathering assembled inside closed premises over a protracted period of time and without any semblance of social distancing or provision of masks and sanitisers. This also caused the spread of Coronavirus infection amongst many persons.”
