In IPL 2021, Steve Smith will be seen representing the Delhi Capitals team instead of the Rajasthan Royals team. And now, talks of him taking up the captaincy of the Australian team for T20, One-day and Test matches are gaining momentum. The cricketer was taken down from the role of the Australian team’s captain back in 2018, after a ball-tampering scandal. Tim Paine took up the captaincy for Test matches, and Aaron Finch became the same for T20 and One Day International matches. And although Steve Smith was not playing for the national team for a certain period of time, he has been back on the fields for some time now.
Back when India defeated Australia, while the latter was playing under the leadership of Aaron Finch, there had been several debates about the need for Steve Smith to return to captaincy. Oddly enough, any time that Steve was asked about it, he gave very vague responses and dodged the topic. However, he has now stated that he would be interested in the role in case the team needs him to take it up. Unfortunately, Justin Langer, who is the coach of the Australian Cricket Team, has mentioned that there are no such positions vacant for Steve to be filling up. He cleared up the air about such rumours and further added that the team has very capable leaders such as Aaron Finch and Tim Paine to lead them in their upcoming games.
