As Spider-Man: No Way Home’s December 17th release date approaches, cinema theatres are promoting the film with fan posters. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many delays in all of Disney/Marvel Studios’ projects. No Way Home intended to enter theatres in July as part of the MCU’s Phase Four. But it was pushed back twice when the studio revised its release plan. The third installment of the Spider-Man franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films to date.
Sony holds the rights to Spider-Man-related characters. No Way Home had long speculations to pay tribute to Sony’s Spider-Man history. It adopts a multiverse idea and includes characters from Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man flicks, particularly Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. The news that Alfred Molina’s Doc Ok (Spider-Man 2) and Jamie Foxx’s Electro (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) will feature as antagonists in the forthcoming film has just added fuel to the fire. On Twitter, Culture Crave posted a photo of the marquees of two movie theatres, Cinepalace (art by OfAmazingSpidey) and Westown Movies. Both of them are employing fan posters for forthcoming movies. On the webs of Westown Movies in Delaware, artist Nuno Sarnadas’ poster was also in use.
The excitement around No Way Home—which might easily become the greatest movie of 2021—is reflected in these “fake” posters. Larger theatres cannot use anything but official marketing materials. Smaller theatres likewise frequently employ fan art (sometimes by accident). The usage of these posters does not imply that any actual narrative details.
