Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Ram Vilas Paswan had been part of the Narendra Modi government since 2014 and was, until his demise, holding the portfolio of Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. He had said that he wanted his son Chirag Paswan to be the chief minister of Bihar. Leader of Opposition in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav said in a tweet, “Sad at the demise of Ram Vilas Paswan ji, a strong pillar of fair politics and Dalit deprivation of consciousness. Exploited, deprived and oppressed classes will always remember his contribution. May his soul rest in peace.”

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is currently serving a sentence at RIMS in Ranchi, said in a tweet, “I am extremely sad to hear of the untimely demise of Ram Vilas bhai. The unbreakable bond and social, political battles fought with him over the past 45 years are swimming in front of my eyes. Ram Vilas brother, you left early. I’m not in the state to say anything else.”
