Police On High Alert As Maharashtra Night Curfew Begins
Though essential and medical services remain undisrupted during the Maharashtra night curfew, police personnel are patrolling all districts under the municipal corporation and investigating those venturing out between 11 pm to 6 am
Strict measures have been implemented by the Maharashtra government after news of the looming second strain of the deadly Coronavirus came in from the United Kingdom. As the central administration issued a series of guidelines for those returning from Britain, different states have adopted additional protocols to keep the contagion in check.
A night curfew has been put to effect from 22 December to 5 January by the Uddhav Thackeray administration in the areas coming under the state’s municipal corporation. During the restriction hours from 11 pm to 6 am, emergency medical facilities will be permitted, while services for essential commodities like milk and vegetables will not be disrupted. Except medical stores, all other shops will remain shut during these hours. No more than five people can assemble at a particular spot.
In footage emerging from the streets of Mumbai during the regulated night time, several policemen were seen patrolling and stopping commuters for routine checks. In the road leading to Bandra’s bandstand, a popular location for the city’s revellers, barricades have been placed restricting entry to the area. Even residents of the location seen in their vehicles were not spared by the authorities.
Fearing the new mutated version of Coronavirus hitting India, all inbound and outbound flights from the UK have been suspended. 2,000 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) doctors and nursing staff have been stationed at Mumbai’s international airport to conduct RT-PCR tests on passengers coming in from Britain, Europe and the middle-east. Samples of those who test positive will be sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for genome sequencing to check for the new strain.
