PM Narendra Modi Appeals States To Use Lockdown As “Last Resort” Amidst The Covid-19 Spike

Addressing the nation, PM Modi emphasized the need for a lockdown. He also urged people to support the administration in this battle to contain the infection.

With nearly 3 lakh cases per day, India is experiencing a massive surge in Covid-19 cases. The numbers are higher than the previous peak during September 2020. Amidst this, many states have imposed lockdown citing it as the only valid option to contain the infection. Stressing upon the same, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned the citizens about the second wave. PM Modi appealed to the states to use lockdowns as the “last resort” while also urging citizens to follow the Covid-19 norms.

Addressing the nation, PM Modi emphasized the need for a lockdown. He also urged people to support the administration in this battle to contain the infection. He said, “In a situation like today, we have to save the country from a lockdown. If you all work together, create awareness then there is no need for containment, never mind a lockdown.”

Furthermore, making an appeal to the states, PM Modi said, ” appeal to states that they should use the lockdown as the last resort – our focus should be micro-containment zones. We will take care of economic health as well as the health of countrymen.” He added that respective state governments should primarily focus on tackling the pandemic. Also, he cited that economic activities and livelihoods should not be affected.

“You must step out only if necessary. I assure you, the nation won’t spare any effort to resolve today’s crisis,” PM Modi said. Highlighting his message, he further referred to the festivals of Ramzan and Ram Navami. PM Modi said, “Today is the last day of Navaratri. Tomorrow is Ram Navami. Maryada Purushottam Ram’s message is for us to be disciplined.  It is also the 7th day of Ramzan. The festival teaches us patience and discipline. Patience and discipline are both needed to fight Covid.”

Talking about the shortage of oxygen, PM Modi said that the government is working with “speed and sensitivity” to ensure that the demands of oxygen meet. “The centre, state, and private companies are working together,” he said.

Today, the nation witnessed its biggest Covid spike recording 2,95,041 cases. Following which, states are planning to impose strict lockdowns.
