On 71st China National Day, Carrie Lam Condemns International Sanctions Against China Over National Security Law
Activists protested and demanded the release of political prisoners, however, security forces ensured complete peace and order during the entire event.
On the eve of China National Day, Hong Kong experiences some protests as well as celebrations. Hong Kong government organised a flag-raising ceremony to mark the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The event was followed by a reception hosted by Chief Executive Carrie Lam. Lam condemned international sanctions against China over the national security law. Meanwhile, activists protested and demanded the release of political prisoners. Last year Hong Kong witnessed fierce clashes between pro-democracy protesters and police. However, this year, government authorities denied permission for a protest citing security and coronavirus concerns.
The security forces made it clear that anyone getting on the streets to protest will be arrested immediately. Summarising her speech, Carrie Lam declared that Hong Kong will continue supporting the national security law and will strive to protect it.
