New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Sacks Minister Over Office Affair
Iain Lees-Galloway was found to be having an affair with a former colleague.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has fired a minister from her cabinet over an affair that he had with a former colleague. The country’s Immigration Minister, Iain Lees-Galloway, was the one to be dismissed after it was discovered that he was in an illicit relationship with a woman who was working at a government organisation and was reporting to him. The minister, who happens to be married and has three children, has apologised and admitted that he acted “completely inappropriately.”
The New Zealand PM, who has a tough test ahead next year during the country’s general elections, said, “The minister has shown a lack of judgement over a period of 12 months — in undertaking this relationship he has opened himself up to accusations of improperly using his office.” Saying that she doesn’t want to pass moral judgements, she added, “He has not modelled the behaviour I expect as a minister that is in charge of setting a standard and culture in workplaces.”
