New Zealand News: Auckland Goes Under A 7-Day COVID-19 Lockdown

Aukland in New Zealand has been imposed another lockdown of 7 days. Citizens seem to have mixed reactions.

The Coronavirus pandemic has affected the entire world globally. Soon after lockdown in several countries were eased, a few new strains of the virus were detected among people. Exactly a year after the first coronavirus case was detected in Auckland, New Zealand, another strain of the UK mutant was detected in a patient. The city was put under lockdown for 7 days. Read on to know more about the situation in Auckland.

Auckland goes under a 7-day COVID-19 lockdown

A seven-day lockdown was announced in Auckland which is a city of almost 2 million people. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the same on late Saturday after they detected that a person was infected a week ago but did not go in isolation for an entire week. She mentioned that they have only asked people to stay at home for a week inside their bubble and avoid any interaction with the outside world. “It is more than likely there will be additional cases in the community,” she added while addressing the citizens.

The new lockdown has a level 3 restriction wherein the citizens are only allowed to leave their houses to bring essential goods or in case of emergencies. The public has been made aware that the infected person had visited several public places over the week. All public events have been cancelled for the week and the rest of the country will have a level 2 restriction. The city had undergone a lockdown in mid-February for 3 days when they had detected a case. Currently, there are about 14 new cases linked to the same cluster.

In 2020, New Zealand was one of the first few countries who managed to curb the disease and get back to their normal lives with 0 cases. The country with a population of over 5 million citizens had reported only 2000 cases with 26 dead and turned out to be a success story. However, due to the recent lockdown, several events have been affected such as the fourth Twenty20 International cricket match and America’s Cup yacht race. Several weddings were also postponed. The citizens are not very happy with the lockdown but do not mind staying back home for yet another week.
