Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Visits President Bidhya Devi Bhandari
Amid calls for his resignation and speculation of his address to the nation, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli met President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.
Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli, on Thursday (July 2), visited the country’s President Bidhya Devi Bhandari after a meeting, the day before, with his key confidantes including his Cabinet Ministers. Earlier in the day, sources from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat had revealed that the PM might address the nation today. It was being reported that Oli was advised by his aides in the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) to reach out to former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s party for support. This comes after Wednesday’s Standing Committee meeting of the NCP that found 17 out of 18 members demanding Oli’s resignation.
Senior leaders including Co-Chair Prachanda, Madhav Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, and Bamdev Gautam asked the PM to step down over several issues. Among these various issues are the Prime Minister’s remarks about India. Recently, Nepal had completed the process of redrawing its political map through a constitutional amendment. Following this, the country decided to incorporate Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura areas along the border, which are maintained by India.
