National Youth Day: A Day To Honour Swami Vivekananda And His Ideals

This Tuesday, January 12th is National Youth Day and it is also Swami Vivekananda’s birthday. Known in India and in the US for his wisdom and knowledge, he was a very well respected figure. He was known to be a powerful personality and made great efforts to interpret Hinduism in the West. He was educated in the Vedas and the Puranas. He also had an extensive knowledge about important topics in the West. He was known to be extremely saint-like, in both his mannerisms and his speech. His ultimate goal was to help others and for others to in turn help others.

In 1985, the government of India decided to honour his ideals by declaring that his birthday will be marked as National Youth Day, and it has been celebrated so ever since.

Inherently, he believed a great deal in the power of youth. If not power, he believed in the possibility of power in the youth of the country. He made stirring and poetry-like speeches which motivated youngsters. He once said, “Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached.”

He also said, “Youth is the best time. The way in which you utilize this period will decide the nature of coming years that lie ahead of you.” Going by these words, one can tell how adamant he was on inner strength, determination and the power a hard work has on a person’s life.

For all the spirituality that was associated with Swami Vivekananda, he pushed youngsters to not just tap into their own spirituality but also their inner being. He said, “You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself,” and “Never be weak, you must be strong; you have infinite strength within you.”

He is known for is advocacy on peace and education. He is known to the the saint who inspired India’s youth to understand what’s right and wrong and fight against the British Rule. Schools and colleges celebrate this day by hosting events like essay writing, dance and singing competitions to promote every child’s inner potential.
