Model’s Rare Video Highlights Plight Of Uighur Muslims in China
The video shows him handcuffed to his bed in a COVID-19 quarantine facility.
The video of a detained 31-year-old Uighur Muslim has put China in a spot regarding the inhumane treatment of its minorities from the northwestern region of Xinjiang. In the video, Merden Ghappar, who is a model for Chinese online retailer, Taobao, can be seen handcuffed to the metal frame of the bed. He was apparently under COVID-19 quarantine when the video was shot, but his family hasn’t heard from him in the last five months.
Ghappar’s video gives us a glimpse at how the Chinese authorities are meting out inhumane treatment to their Uighur Muslim population. His family has shared the video along with a letter that calls on children as young as 13 to “repent and surrender” to expose the psychological pressure placed on Uighur communities by China. China’s ruling Communist Party has been under growing international pressure over the treatment of its minorities in Xinjiang. What the government calls “re-education camps” are being seen as “concentration camps” by many around the world.
