A shameful incident was recently recorded in Chitrakoot, about 700 km from the national capital, in the Bundelkhand region of the state of Uttar Pradesh. According to sources, minor girls aged between 10 and 17 years belonging to poor tribal families are exploited and forced to work in illegal mines. They are made to work forcibly for their own survival, while the contractors and middlemen do not pay them their wages, but treat them miserably. They have to trade their bodies in exchange for their meagre wages. The poor girls cannot raise their voice against this unlawful act just because of fear of losing their livelihood.

Many girls even claim that if they don’t obey the contractors, they are beaten up. Several of them were even raped but just to earn a living for their family, they helplessly trade their bodies.
