Through his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke about Indian breeds of dogs. While addressing the nation, he proudly shared the contributions made by canine soldiers like Balram, a brave CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) dog who uncovered ammunition on the Amarnath Yatra route in 2006, and Bhawna, who successfully detected an IED (improvised explosive device) but was martyred when it exploded while being defused.

He also fondly spoke about Cracker, a highly-skilled CRPF sniffer dog who attained martyrdom in an IED blast in Bastar on April 7, 2017. PM Modi discussed several Indian breeds of dogs namely Kanni, Combai, Mudhol Hound, Himachali Hound, Rajapalayam and Chippiparai too. While urging people to buy or adopt Indian breeds if they plan to own a canine, he further said that the cost of maintenance of these dogs is quite low, and these breeds accustom to Indian conditions very easily.
