There is some hope for relief from the Coronavirus pandemic for India in 2021. According to the Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, an indigenous vaccine to combat the virus will be ready by early next year. He stated that two out of the three immunisations are in their third stage of clinical trials. By July-August 2021, the government plans to vaccinate at least 25-30 crore citizens. Target groups will be set up and a distribution model will be put in place to ensure the inoculation reaches the necessary and frontline sections of society first.

The two injections in their final leg of trials are the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine being tested by Serum Institute of India and the Bharat Biotech developed Covaxin. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is working with both the organizations.

Meanwhile, other vaccine candidates including the United States based Pfizer and Moderna and Russia’s Sputnik V have also declared their efficacy against COVID19 and are expected to be launched soon. Moderna will be priced at 32-37 dollars, while a Pfizer shot will cost around 20 dollars. In comparison, India’s homegrown vaccines could be priced lower or even administered free to successfully drive the health crisis out of the nation.
