Lockdown In UK: PM Johnson Reverses Christmas Plans For Millions
Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed an effective lockdown on over 16 million people in England and reversed plans to ease curbs over Christmas.
The Prime Minister of UK, Boris Johnson has imposed an effective lockdown in England, leading to changes in Christmas plans for millions of Britons. He said Britain was dealing with a new Coronavirus strain that was 70% more transmissible than the original one. Boris Johnson and his scientific advisors believe that the vaccines will be effective and the new strain is not more deadly or serious in terms of illness caused. But he said that it was necessary to take urgent action to limit its spread. Covid-19 cases in England have soared in the last two weeks because of the new variant.
Johnson had earlier allowed three households to mix indoors for five days during the festive period. However, he announced on Saturday that London and Southeast England which are currently the highest level of a three-tier system of rules will now be placed in a new Tier 4 level, similar to those of a recent national lockdown. He said, “Given the early evidence we have on this new variant of the Coronavirus. It is with a very heavy heart I must tell you we cannot continue with Christmas as planned,” Boris Johnson told a news conference. “I sincerely believe there is no alternative open to me.”
He added that people in Tier 4-16.4 million and about a third of the population of England will be required to stay at home except for essential reasons such as work and other non-essential retail will close, as will indoor leisure and entertainment. Social mixing in the UK will be limited to meeting one other person in an outdoor space. The new rules will be coming into effect from Saturday. The population in Tier 4 will not be allowed to mix with others on Christmas while everyone else in England will now be allowed to see friends and family on Christmas Day.
