Legendary Indian Athlete Milkha Singh Appreciates the Increasing Number of Sports Films In Bollywood

The renowned Indian athlete, Milkha Singh recently showed his appreciation for the upcoming Bollywood films that are being made in the sports genre. The blockbuster biographical sports drama film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was based on the life of Milkha Singh himself. And he is more than happy to see that filmmakers are focusing on making more movies in the sports genre nowadays.

Milkha Singh, the legendary Indian track athlete, recently shared his take on sports films in Bollywood. According to him, the making of Bollywood films in the sports genre is a very positive practice that can be inspiring to many viewers. In 2021 alone, there are a lot of Hindi films all set to hit the big screens from the sports genre. Various Bollywood films such as Saina, Liger, Maidan, 83 and Jersey starring popular actors in their leading roles will be released this year.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s upcoming sports drama Toofan‘s trailer was also released some time back. The film will star Farhan Akhtar in the lead role with Mrunal Thakur being cast opposite him and will be digitally released on the OTT platform. Actor Farhan Akhtar had also essayed the role of Milkha Singh in the biographical sports drama film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which was based on the latter’s life. Milkha Singh revealed that his son gave Bhaag Milkha Bhaag‘s director, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the rights for making the film on him as he was a swimmer himself. It was their belief that only one sportsman could truly understand and correctly portray another sportsperson’s pain or agony in the journey towards success, in a film.

Milkha Singh has stated that after the 1960s, he has not watched any films other than Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. However, he did watch a lot of films that starred the late actor Raj Kapoor as he was a very good friend of his. He further added that he always met the actor every time he visited Mumbai too. According to the athlete, Prithviraj Kapoor had conducted a puja at home for Milkha Singh to win a medal at the Olympic Games when he had participated in it years ago.
