Batasia Loop

You aren’t a true-blue Bengali if you haven’t visited Darjeeling yet. Puri, Darjeeling and Digha (now almost replaced by Mandarmani) are like the pilgrimage sites for every Bengali and most of us have travelled to these destinations multiple times. But if you are among those rare people, how about you do that this Kali Pujo, just like Abhimaan star Sayantika Banerjee. Here are a list of places you should visit once you land in Darjeeling.

This famous railway loop has featured in a lot of movies too. It houses the Gorkha War Memorial which was built to honour all the soldiers from the region who sacrificed their lives during World Wars 1 and 2. Batasia Loop offers great views of the mountains around too.

Tiger Hill

If you are not a morning person, put multiple alarms, but do not miss the sun rise from Tiger Hill. Keep a little time in hand and leave early because you are bound to face traffic jams on the way to Tiger Hill. If you are lucky, you will get a glimpse of the sun rising and its rays lighting up the Kanchenjunga. It’s a view worth waiting for.

Are you the adventurous kind? Then head out on a trek to Sandakphu. It is the highest point of our state at a height of 3,636 metres and has spectacular views of Mount Everest and the Kanchenjunga peak.

Eat And Shop

Stock up on your annual supply of woollens at the Bhutia market which offers stylish winterwear at affordable prices. From gloves and caps to jackets and pullovers – you will find them all. Also, head to Nathmulls for some authentic Darjeeling tea. Glenary’s, known for its delicious Continental dishes and yummy bakery items, is also a must visit, and so is sipping coffee on the rooftop of Keventer’s.

The Mall

We would not recommend riding horses, but a walk around and across the mall is highly recommended. Breathe in the cool mountain air and browse the shops that the mall is dotted with. Leave the touristy central spot behind and walk down the various alleys for some scenic views.

Toy Train

It is listed in Unesco’s World Heritage List. If you are lucky and the train is running, hop on from New jalpaiguri station itself. If you have taken a flight to Bagdogra, take a ride from Ghoom and go all the way to Kurseong whose misty hilly roads you can explore before you take the train back to Ghoom.
