Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard; Depp declared as a ‘Wife-Beater’
Johnny had sued the News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun and its executive editor, Dan Wootton over an April 2018 article. The article had accused the Hollywood actor of assaulting his wife Amber Heard. Later, his estranged wife’s US counsel, Elaine Charlson Bredehoft said that the verdict was not a surprise and also added that they would be presenting more voluminous evidence in the US.
The British Court, however, ruled in favour of the publisher and declared Depp as a wife-beater. The trial included days of testimony in July from Depp, Heard and various acquaintances of the duo. Heard also told the court that Depp had threatened to kill her many times. The lawyers for the publisher provided 14 separate incidents of physical abuse by Depp which took place in Los Angeles, Tokyo and Australia between 2013 and 2016 as evidence.
Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard had met on the sets of the 2011 comedy film, The Rum Diary. Later, the couple tied the knot in Los Angeles in the year 2015. However, their marriage went downhill as they separated in 2017. Both had accused each other of domestic violence and abuse during their married life. Amber accused Johnny of turning into a violent alter ego under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
However, Johnny rubbished the allegations and claimed that Heard was the aggressor. He also claimed that Heard threw a vodka bottle at him during an altercation in Australia which severed the tip of his finger. Johnny Depp is also suing his ex-wife for $50 million in Virginia over a Washington Post story about domestic violence. The trial will take place next year.
