Johnny Depp, the eccentric pirate sailing over the high seas is loved by every casual movie-goer to die hard cinema enthusiasts. The 58-year-old actor has about 100 different on-screen appearances to his credit, which shows his versatility as an actor. But like all career actors, Johnny has also had some love-hate career choices. In an interview with the Collider, he talks about his regrets for his role as Thomas Hanson or ‘Tom’ in the 80s hit television series 21 Jump Street (1987-91). 

We shouldn’t be surprised when we see Johnny strumming on an electric guitar, music had always been the actor’s initial choice but when that wouldn’t lift-off, he landed in Hollywood with his debut appearance in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) with a little help from his buddy Nicholas Cage. But the actor started receiving recognition in the industry as Tom in the 80s 21 Jump Street. The film narrates the story of a group of young under-cover cops who are tasked with investigating crimes in a high school by disguising themselves as students. In the interview, Johnny recalls about trying to get fired, he says he felt as though he was “in a prison, creatively.” By then, he had become synonymous as a “teen idol”, he feared he would be given only certain roles which is suicidal for his creativity as an actor. He says further, “In the first two seasons I thought there was a lot of good stuff going on”, “There were good, important messages. But I think around the third season, it started to get a little show-boaty, … It started to become this action-packed can of soup, you know? You just make it, and send it out.” The actor left the show after the fourth season.

Following which Depp has had a lot of success, from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Donnie Brasco (1997), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), and more. But his career sky-rocketed in the 2000s with his iconic role as Captain The 58-year-old actor has about 100 different on-screen appearances to his credit, which shows his versatility as an actor. in The Pirates of Caribbean series (2003- Present), earning him the Screen Actors Guild Awards and nomination for Academy, BAFTA and The Golden Globes.
