In the 46th match of IPL 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders faced a harsh eight-wicket defeat by Kings XI Punjab at Sharjah. Solid performance with the ball in the first innings by Punjab helped them restrict KKR to 149/9. A good partnership between KXIP’s Chris Gayle and Mandeep Singh in the second innings made sure that the team continues its winning streak. During the post-match press conference, Shubman Gill was asked about losing the wickets in the middle overs. Shubman Gill said that in the middle overs they were still going well. He mentioned that in 9 overs they were at 90 odd runs for the loss of 3 wickets but after the loss of Eoin Morgan’s wicket, they just lost momentum. Eoin Morgan played a crucial knock of 40 runs in just 25 balls. His partnership with Shubman Gill helped them put up a score of 149 on board. After the loss of Eoin Morgan’s wicket, KKR kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. A short cameo by Lockie Ferguson towards the end of the innings also played an important role in KKR’s total.
Talking about their plan while batting, Shubman Gill said that the plan was just to show good intent and if they got balls in their areas they were going for it. Talking about the target, Shubman Gill said that they fell 15-20 runs short. He said that they could not rotate the strike in the middle overs thus falling short by 20 odd runs.
KXIP vs KKR
KXIP bowlers had a good day with Shami leading from the front. Mohammed Shami got 3 wickets while Chris Jordan and Ravi Bishnoi contributed with 2 wickets each. Chasing a target of 150 runs, KXIP got off to a good start but lost the orange cap holder KL Rahul early in the innings. After his dismissal, Chris Gayle came in and played a blasting knock of 51 runs in just 29 balls. He hit 5 sixes and two fours in his knock. He was accompanied by opener Mandeep Singh who top-scored for KXIP with 66 runs in 56 balls.
