Indian Men’s Hockey Team Loses Semifinal Against Belgium, Will Now Compete For Bronze
Despite starting with a lead, India lost their momentum after Belgium’s attacking mode in the following quarters. Optimistically, the campaign is still on for the Indian team with hopes of bagging the bronze.
Barring the 7-1 defeat against Australia, the Indian men’s hockey team had an impressive Tokyo campaign. With great performances and equivalent spirits, they made it into the top fours, raising our expectations. However, the Indian side suffered a major setback after losing the semifinal to the 2018 world champions Belgium. Despite starting with a lead, India lost their momentum after Belgium’s attacking mode in the following quarters. Optimistically, the campaign is still on for the Indian team with hopes of bagging the bronze.
On Tuesday, India began with a great start in the semifinal game against Belgium. Though the rival team scored an early goal, India managed to take a lead smashing two goals. In the second quarter, Belgium made a comeback, leveling the scores. The following rounds changed the game completely with the Indian team failing to prevent the attacks from the rival side. And thus, in the last 15 minutes, Belgium took the complete grip over the game, winning by 5-2.
Well, this is not the first time India has lost against Belgium. Earlier in 2019, during the FIH Pro League match, India had lost the game by 2-3.
While this marked a heartbreaking defeat for the Indian side in the Tokyo campaign, they also missed out on a chance of making it into the Olympic finals after four decades. However, the good news is that India has still sustained their spot in the competition. They will now compete against the losing team of the second semifinal between Australia and Germany.
Going by their overall performances, the Indian men’s hockey team has had a noteworthy camp. They opened the game with an interesting win against New Zealand by 3-2. Furthermore, in the group matches, they got four gripping wins against Germany, Spain, Argentina, and Japan. The Indian side just lost a single game against the Aussies albeit made a great comeback in the qualifiers.
