India And US Sign A Pact To Treat Cancer Through Ayurveda
India and the United States have come together to explore traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda in the search for cancer medicines. The two countries have signed a Letter of Intent(LOI) for the same.
India has maintained commercial ties with the United States for many years now. Be it essentials or commercial goods, the two nations have formed several treaties together. Recently, India and the United States have signed a pact to explore traditional medicines like Ayurveda to treat cancer. The two countries have signed a Letter of Intent(LoI) during the bilateral 2+2 Summit.
According to this letter, there would be a regular exchange of data, scientists and materials required for the research to find complementary as well as alternative medicines for cancer. This letter was signed by the authorities on 27 October 2020. It was signed between the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), the apex body in India for the undertaking, coordinating, formulating, developing and promoting research in Ayurveda under the Ministry of AYUSH, and the Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM), an agency under the US government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH).
This pact has opened doors for long term association in areas of research in AYUSH medicines particularly in the area of cancer prevention as well as treatment. This letter of intent provides an exchange of inputs as well as human resources. This would open a pathway to look at Ayurveda as a means to treat cancer which is recognised to a certain extent in India.
Dr Mohd Rafi Hakeem, District AYUSH Officer said that Ayurveda can help treat cancer but right now it is a supplement to allopathy in this regard and therefore more inputs and research is required. He also mentioned that this pact would turn out to be a major development in the field of Ayurveda. Talking about how Ayurveda can be used, the doctor said that when combined with modern science Ayurveda can turn out to be better medicine for cancer as it is an immune-suppressive disease and Ayurveda help in improving immunity thus yielding a better quality of life.
Talking about the research, Hakeem mentioned that these researches would help Ayurveda meet the modern parameters of medical science which it lacks right now. He also stated that the United States has better research centres which would help Ayurveda yield better results to treat cancer.
