On January 19, 2021, India scripted a historic win in Brisbane by defeating Australia by three wickets and won the much-talked-about cricket series with a score of 2-1. Interestingly, team India also became the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba in 33 long years. Although, the team lost Rohit Sharma on the final day, his partner Shubman Gill set the game with a brisk 91-run knock. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara held things tight from the other side with a gritty 211-ball 56. On the other hand, the runs kept coming from the other end. The star of the chase, Rishabh Pant scored an unbeaten 89 from 138 balls with eight boundaries including one to finish off the game. Talking about the game highlights, earlier on Day 5, opening batsman Shubman Gill registered his highest Test score with a rapid-paced 91 from 146 balls. Interestingly, India’s chase of the 328-run target is now the first-ever successful chase of 300+ target in Brisbane in Test cricket. On the other hand, India’s this victory on Tuesday ended Australia’s 31-match unbeaten streak in Test cricket at Brisbane’s Gabba ground. The team also set a record, as it became the first team to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for three consecutive Test series.
Interestingly, at the age of 21 years and 133 days, Shubman Gill became the youngest Indian opener to score a fifty in the 4th innings. While Rishabh Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score three 50+ scores on Australian soil with his 89* score. Also, a handful of players made their debut in Test series, including Saini, Gill, Natarajan, Sundar and Siraj. Winning this series was not a cakewalk for the team as five main bowlers were missing while Virat Kohli wasn’t available. The match was full of twists as Shardul gave a simple catch to Lyon when India’s score was 325/7.
After the match was over, Rishabh Pant said, “We’ve been practising hard after the first Test. The team management always backs me and tells me you are a match-winner and you have to go out there and win and I am happy I did it today”.
