Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai Gets Hero’s Welcome Upon Return To Newsroom
The media tycoon was arrested two days ago as part of a crackdown against dissent.
Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai arrived in his newsroom to be welcomed with cheers from his employees after having received bail. He was given a hero’s welcome by the Apple Daily newspaper, which he owns. Lai was arrested on Monday under China’s controversial national security law and was in custody for 40 hours. Another activist, Anges Chow was also taken into custody by the police under the national security law that was imposed this June.
Both these arrests came after China’s decision to delay elections, which has received international condemnation. In a live-stream conversation hosted by his newspaper after his release, Lai said, “I didn’t expect an arrest as quick as this because I thought that China, with such a strong response from the international community, knew that the implementation of the national security law was a blunder.” He also added that he was touched by Hong Kong residents who supported freedom of the press by buying copies of his newspaper as well as shares of his media company, Next Digital Ltd.
