Coriander or Dhania is one of the things that you must get on Dhanteras. Dhania brings fortune when bought on this auspicious day. Getting Coriander seeds on this day and offering it to Goddess Lakshmi is an old standing ritual. Make sure that after you offer these seeds, you sow a few of them wherever you see fit in the house. If they do grow into plants, consider your house blessed since this is a sign of good luck.
Bring the ‘5 Gomti Chakra’ home without fail on Dhanteras. Gomti Chakras are natural stones rare to the river beds of Gomti in Dwaraka. Bearing a striking resemblance to the weapon of Lord Krishna – the Sudarshan Chakra, Gomti Chakra stones not only protect you from evil eyes but also help you attract peace, wealth and prosperity. Once you offer this to Goddess Lakshmi, you can keep it in your locker the next day. It is believed that this ensures a continuous flow of wealth at home.
On this day, with Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, the destroyer of hurdles is also worshipped. As a result of this, it is considered auspicious to get their idols home. Although while getting these idols one must make sure that Lord Ganesha’s trunk must always point towards the left side and Goddess Lakshmi must be seated amidst the lotus flower while money flows from her hand.
As uncommon and weird as this may sound, buying a broom for your house on Dhanteras is considered as a sign of good luck. It is said that you must buy a broom on Dhanteras and start using it only after the Lakshmi Pooja on Diwali. Make sure that you do away with your old broom before Diwali in this case.
Diwali is the ‘Festival of lights’ and for this reason, people are expected to buy a few ‘Diyas’ and light their houses. When you do so this Diwali, also make sure that you offer a few lights to Goddess Lakshmi. This ensures happiness in the house.
