Following a letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi, a CWC meeting will take place today to decide the party’s future strategy and president.
A Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will take place today, following a letter received by Congress President Sonia Gandhi by her party leaders two weeks back. According to sources, Gandhi has already told her associates that she would like to resign as she draws closer to the end of her one-year tenure, as the interim president.
The letter asking for a CWC meeting to decide the future strategy of Congress was signed by 23 ministers. Stating that it is important for the party to regain its power, an example of the Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rise and influence over the youth was cited in the document. Further, the contents also included the importance of the new president working on-ground.
Demanding for block level elections and CWC elections, the need for an effective collective responsibility-based system has been stressed upon. Senior leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and Kapil Sibal have signed the letter. Milind Deora, Jitin Prasad and Arvinder Singh Lovely are also signatories.
In the written communication, allegations on the CWC that it did not support the party at difficult times have also been made.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel have however, openly supported Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as indispensable leaders of the Congress.
