Hathras Victim’s Family Alleges Pressure To Change Statement
After District Magistrate Praveen Kumar Laxkar was caught on camera forcing the family to change their statement, a new political drama has started around the case
As the political drama around the Hathras case intensifies, the victim’s family has accused the Uttar Pradesh administration of forcing them to change their statement. Hathras District Magistrate (DM) Praveen Kumar Laxkar was caught on camera threatening the girl’s family, while Prashant Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (ADG), UP said that the forensics report confirms that the 19-year-old was not raped.
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has summoned the state’s ADG, Director General of Police (DGP) and the DM to assess the handling of the case. The judicial body has asked for an explanation about the hurried and unconsented cremation of the victim by the police in the middle of the night. October 12 has been set as the date for the hearing of the authorities and the girl’s family by the bench.
Meanwhile, Nirbhaya case lawyer Seema Kushwaha reached Hathras yesterday, only to be stopped by the police from entering the district. This led to a verbal exchange between the advocate and the local forces. She is however determined to fight the case for the family and ensure justice for their deceased daughter.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were unsuccessful in meeting the family after they were sent back to Delhi by the police. They both tweeted in protest saying that crimes against lower sections of society will never stop this way.
Many candle marches and silent protests were conducted in various parts of the country like Bareilly, Patna and a demonstration by the Samajwadi Party, who asked for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into this matter.
