Actress Urvashi has had a remarkable presence in the Malayalam movie industry breathing life into some of the most iconic female characters. From being hysterically funny in one moment to making us all tear up in the next, Urvashi’s acting province is unmatched. Urvashi is well known for the plethora of hilarious roles she has done in Malayalam cinema, and some of the most touching mother roles in Tamil. Urvashi and her sisters
Kavitha Ranjini was born into a family of drama artists. She adopted the stage name Urvashi once she started acting. Urvashi had four siblings, all of whom followed their parents’ path to become drama artists. Out of the four, her two sisters, Kala Ranjini and Kalpana broke their way into the cinema after Urvashi and went to act in numerous films.
Debut and drama
Urvashi started off as a child artist at the age of eight. She did multiple movies as a child artist before finding short roles and jumping back and forth between theatre and big screen. Her big break came in the ’80s when she acted in an average of five movies a year. It is also an interesting fact that in 1995, Urvashi starred in M.P. Sukumaran Nair’s Kazhakam, without taking any remuneration for her work in the film, during the peak of her career. The film brought her multiple awards including national recognition for her role.
Not just an actor
The actress, who is adored by fans for her scintillating acting performances, has also tried her hand at writing. She has penned down scripts for films such as Ulsavamelam and Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu, to name a few, and has produced a couple of movies.
The actor has bagged numerous honours and coveted awards including a National Award in 2006, five Kerala State Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Awards, and one Filmfare. The actress has also been recognised for her performances in TV serials.

Urvashi has played numerous roles to perfection, throughout her career. From a small-town romantic woman in Yodha to a hysterical mother in Dhilluku Dhuddu 2, the actor never ceased to amaze her fans. It isn’t much of a surprise that Urvashi is popularly called the ‘encyclopedia of acting’, thanks to her versatility of roles and her ability to master any look.
