Known for her liberal and charitable acts, Rani Rashmoni always stood up for injustice and things that she believed in. Here are some instances.

Zee Bangla‘s show Rani Rashmoni follows and revolves around the life of the real-life founder of the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple in Kolkata — Rani Rashmoni. Rani Rashmoni (played by Ditipriya Roy in the Bengali serial) was a very liberal woman who never failed to take a stand against unjust or unfair behaviour towards others. She was largely known for her charitable acts and valuable contributions to the society in those days when the Britishers were ruling our country.

When she saved the rebels from Captain Hallery’s wrath

Very recently in the Bengali TV show, we saw how Rani Rashmoni saved the rebels. When Captain Hallery barged into Rani’s house looking for the rebels, he issued an order for them to be shot. At this, Rani Rashmoni picked up Goddess Durga’s trident and threatened the Indian soldiers to drop the weapons or she would put the trident through Captain Hallery. She insisted that none of the rebels should even get a scratch due to them. Eventually, the Captain dropped the orders and left them alone.

When she fought for widow remarriage

Similarly, Rani Rashmoni also stood up along with Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar for the rights of women to re-marry after being widowed. In those days, it was not a common or acceptable thing for any widowed woman to remarry. But despite all objections, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar and Rani Rashmoni did not hesitate to speak their minds about the rights of widows to Rajabahadur. When opposed, they questioned why there was to be a bias between men and women. Rani Rashmoni added that if men could marry countless times throughout his lifetime, women deserve to have similar rights too.

When she used her tact to help Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar

Another time, when a band of singers arrived outside Rani’s house to ridicule Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar for supporting the cause of widow remarriage, Rani Rashmoni dealt with them with extreme intelligence. To Mathur Babu and the priest’s surprise, she invited the singers inside, hosted them, and even offered them money. Ishwarchandra knew that this was Rani’s tactful way of working. She announced soon after that the money was for them to perform on the day when the law for widow remarriage would be officially passed. Rani was confident about it.

When she gave an ultimatum to Abhay

Abhay tried to blame Rani Rashmoni for his financial helplessness along with her methods of doing religious things. She gave him the money and told him that he could restart his business procedures again. Rani did not let Abhay cross his limits and gave him an ultimate warning to never try and interrupt her process in building the temple and left.

When she overcame opposition to build the temple

In another instance, Shibananda told Rani Rashmoni and her family that the temple’s installation would only be considered a possibility if there were no disruptions caused by wrongful behaviour against the religion. Despite great opposition against the establishment of the temple from Shibananda, Rani stood her ground and stayed determined to go through with it.
