France: Healthcare Workers March The Streets Asking For Better Wages
Apart from pay hikes, the protestors also demanded an increase in the budget for the healthcare system.
In France hundreds of doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff marched the streets of Paris demanding better wages and an increase in the budget for the healthcare system across the country. This protest has come at a time when the government is close to wrapping up weeks of talks with healthcare workers over altering the working conditions in hospitals.
The healthcare employees in France have been complaining for a long time about the insufficient staff and low pay. They say that it’s the low wages that prompt doctors and nurses to take jobs at private clinics. In fact, the same issue had led to several strikes last year as well.
French health minister Olivier Véran had earlier announced a package of 6.3 billion Euros for increasing the salaries of health workers. However, the activists had said that this amount is not enough and further development is needed to cater to their needs. Like many countries, the French healthcare system has also been struggling to contain the coronavirus pandemic over the past few months.
