Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee Passes Away At 84
PM Modi tweeted in honour of the veteran politician and said he had left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation
Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee took his last breath at the Army Hospital (R&R) in Delhi Cantt today after battling a long illness. The news was confirmed by his son, his son Abhijit Mukherjee. The highly-respected statesman was first admitted at the facility on August 10. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “India grieves the passing away of Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation. A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society.”
Dr Mukherjee served as the 13th President of India from 2012 until 2017. He was succeeded by Ram Nath Kovind who currently holds the post. His political career had started in 1969 with the Indian National Congress, which he served until he became the President. Last year, he was conferred with India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. Back in 2008, he was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
