It was Khan who choreographed Madhuri’s song, Bada Dukh Dina O Ramji from the movie, Ram Lakhan. After this, she choreographed Madhuri’s several other songs like Maar Daala, Ek Do Teen, Tamma Tamma Loge, Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, Choli Pe Peeche Kya, which remain massive hits even today. On a TV show, Madhuri paid the warmest tribute to her guruji by dipping the latter’s feet in the water. Saroj expressed that she got a name in the industry after she met Madhuri. “I am because of her, and maybe she is what she is because of me,” said Khan. She added, “Madhuri is my life’s shadow and xerox”. Madhuri too left no stone unturned in praising her guru on several occasions. On an award show, the Dil To Pagal Hai star once said, “How to dance with expressions, I’ve learnt it from Saroj Ji. It’s a huge thing for me, that she came into my life”.
“The Guru-shishya bond that we shared, the assurance that she would be my mother on the sets, I’ll miss everything. Today on the occasion of Guru Purnima, I pay my tribute to her. Nobody can make women look so beautiful, desirable & sensuous on-screen like her. She made everything look like poetry in motion. Smitten by her, I had told her, Saroji ji, agar aap shakkar hoti na, I would add you in my cup of tea & drink it. She would laugh heartily at this. I’ll miss that playful laughter,” wrote Madhuri in her emotional note for Saroj Khan, after the latter breathed her last.
Madhuri continued, “Dancing in front of the camera & dancing on stage are two different things. Saroj Ji taught me how to romance the camera when we worked on Ek Do Teen. Such was the song’s popularity that Filmfare had to create the Best Choreography category to honour Saroj Ji. I’ll miss her resolve to push the envelope all the time.”
Ace Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan’s contribution to the industry remains unforgettable. Interestingly, her last choreography was also for none other than her favourite, Madhuri. Saroj Khan’s last memory with Bollywood remains Madhuri Dixit’s song Tabaah Ho Gaye in the movie, Kalank.
