Fire In Telangana Srisailam Power Plant: Nine Persons Feared Trapped
Short circuit believed to be cause of fire at underground hydroelectric plant.
An underground hydroelectric plant in Srisailam, Telangana has caught fire, and nine persons are still trapped inside. Nineteen people were on shift when the fire started at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday at unit one of the underground powerhouse of the Srisailam hydroelectric plant. While ten people managed to escape, the other nine were trapped inside. Among those trapped are a division engineer, four assistant engineers, two junior plant attendants and two others from Amara Raja Batteries.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has arrived at the site and is currently trying to evacuate those trapped. Though, they are experiencing hindrances due to it being an underground facility. “The project unit operates at multiple levels. Those in the control room have managed to come out. Others at lower levels couldn’t come out because of the smoke. The current being switched off also hampered rescue and escape efforts,” said one official.
