Farmer Sets Herself Ablaze In Madhya Pradesh In Front Of Government Staffers
Savra Bi was protesting the building of an approach road on her farm.
In a shocking incident that evoked memories of the Guna suicide attempt by a Dalit couple, a woman farmer from Madhya Pradesh attempted self-immolation in front of government staffers on Thursday. She suffered from 20 percent burn injuries, as villagers saved her from the flames and rushed her to the hospital. A video of the incident shows police officials were also present at the location and did not in any way attempt to stop the woman from setting herself ablaze.
The incident took place in Dewas, near Indore, Madhya Pradesh. According to sources, an administration team had arrived on the woman’s farm with a JCB machine to clear it in order to build an approach road. The team was also accompanied by Government Revenue staff and policemen. When they started to destroy the soybean crop in the farm, the woman, named Savra Bi and her family protested. When the officials didn’t relent, she set herself on fire.
