Drugs Worth Rs 1000 Crore Seized In Navi Mumbai Was From Afghanistan
The massive consignment was seized by the Mumbai custom officials in Navi Mumbai’s port
In one of the biggest narcotics operations, Rs 1000 crore worth of heroin was seized in Bandargah in Navi Mumbai. In the joint effort by the Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the massive drugs consignment was caught on Saturday night.
The illegal shipment reportedly came in from Afghanistan via Iran. Afghanistan has been a hub for illicit opium production and drug-trafficking since 2001.
The customs department and DRI were on high alert after they grew suspicious of the incoming delivery. The drugs were hidden in pipes, disguised as bamboo plants. The handlers tried to pass it off as Ayurvedic medicines during their interrogation.
The authorities are currently probing the case in Mumbai and may also take their investigation to Delhi. Meanwhile, they are looking deeper into this modus operandi, as they believe that revenues generated from such illegal businesses can also be used for terrorist activities.
This is the country’s biggest ever narcotics seizure by Maharashtra till date. Previously in January, the Punjab police had found about 950 crores worth of drugs.
