Donald Trump’s Account Suspension Upheld by Oversight Board of Facebook
Donald Trump calls the extension of his Facebook and Instagram accounts’ suspension, by Facebook’s Oversight Board, disgraceful.
Donald Trump’s accounts were suspended back in January by Facebook. Recently, the Oversight Board of Facebook further upheld the suspension which the former President of the United States of America called ‘a total disgrace’. While the board said the indefinite suspension was inappropriate, it gave Facebook another six months to come up with an alternative to this suspension after a review. Following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, the Facebook account of the USA’s former president had been banned by Facebook. According to Facebook, this decision was correct and absolutely necessary. Recently, the Oversight Board of Facebook went through this matter which resulted in their verdict of upholding the prevailing suspension for some more time. However, the board stated that the indefinite nature of the suspension was wrong and that a proportionate response needs to be determined that syncs with the rules and guidelines of Facebook.
The board gave Facebook a duration of 6 months to review their decision to impose an indefinite suspension/ban of Donald Trump’s account. Facebook has further asked the Oversight Board to recommend ways to manage the accounts of political leaders. The social media platform had banned Trump from accessing his Facebook and Instagram accounts in order to prevent any further violence or unrest after the U.S. Capitol got stormed earlier on January 6, 2021. But Donald Trump has called this extension of his suspension ‘a total disgrace’ while stating that it violated his freedom of speech as well.
