Delhi Police Files 751 FIRs And 200 Charge Sheets In Connection With Communal Riots
Delhi Police allege that the communal riots were pre-planned and promise that a thorough investigation shall be undertaken.
India’s national capital saw its worst Hindu-Muslim violence in four decades in February 2020. The riots lasted for two and a half days and the clashes between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiralled out of control in which at least 53 people were killed and hundreds were severely injured. Now, almost five months later, 751 FIRs and 200 charge sheets have been filed. 1,430 people have been arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the riots. Out of 751 cases, the Special Investigation Team of Delhi Police Crime Branch is investigating 59 and have made around 337 arrests so far. The local police are investigating 691 cases and have made 1,079 arrests as of July 11. Moreover, The Special Cell is investigating one case of a larger conspiracy and have made 14 arrests.
Delhi Police believes that the communal riots were not a spontaneous outburst of violence but were pre-planned. Whatsapp messages, video recordings, and CCTV footage helped the Delhi Police arrest the culprits.
