Dal Lake Regains Its Charm As Water Sports Resume After Lockdown

Enthusiasts and athletes heave a sigh of relief as they can finally participate in a host of events

The Coronavirus pandemic put a halt on all the activities happening in our country. With the nationwide lockdown, all commercial work was stopped and people were confined to their houses. For months, there were no events and competitions. Recently, with the lockdown being unlocked in phases and things getting back to normalcy, Dal Lake in Srinagar has also filled with boats again. Water sports has started again, giving relief to several water athletes and other small business owners.

In Srinagar, Dal Lake is one of the popular tourist destinations and water sports is the most famous activity at this place. With the resumption of activities, many water sports enthusiasts are elated and participating enthusiastically. Due to the COVID lockdown, all sports activities in the Srinagar valley were put on hold as people were bound to stay indoors. One of the athletes at the Dal lake talked about how COVID-19 pandemic affected her life. She said that due to water sports being on halt, they were forced to sit idle in their houses. She also stated that being a sports person, it is important for them to have a physical activity or it would make them feel anxious and depressed.

The water sports activities in Dal Lake were organised with proper social distancing guidelines and all necessary precautions were taken during the event. Another athlete shared his take about the latest development and said that they are happy to participate in these kinds of water sports events.

Talking about sports like swimming, canoeing, K-1, K-2, he said that these sports are already met with social distancing protocols. The locals in Srinagar also hailed the decision and appreciated the Government’s efforts to engage and encourage youths. One of the locals in Srinagar mentioned that water sports activities lead to a lot of youth engagement and also attracts tourists. He also stated that Kashmir and Dal Lake are incomplete without water sports activities.  He tagged these events as a ‘welcome step’ where youths come and spend their time so that they don’t get time to radicalise themselves.

Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as a talent hub of the country as the youth here are excelling in different fields and making the union territory and country proud. Not only sports but the youths from the area are also gaining name in other cultural activities. The administration here is also encouraging the youths and providing them with all the facilities so that they can excel in their respective fields.
