The country continues to rage against the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. And amid calls for harsher punishment to the perpetrators and more safety for women in the country, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that the number of rape incidents has, in fact, risen after the gang-rape and murder of Nirbhaya, which shook the nation in 2012. After analysis of the state-wise rape cases, it has been found that Rajasthan tops the list. Data released by NCRB for 2019 put Rajasthan at the top when it comes to rape or attempt to rape cases.

Between 2018 and 2019, there was a drastic increase of 49.11 per cent in cases of crimes against women in Rajasthan. Overall, Rajasthan stood second in crime against women, with a crime rate of 110.4 per lakh population that was calculated by adding crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL).
