COVID-19: Was Tamil Nadu Government Hiding Real Number Of Fatalities?
The health department has revised the toll, adding 444 new deaths.
Tamil Nadu, the second-worst affected state when it comes to COVID-19 cases, has apparently been found to be hiding the number of deaths due to the virus. A panel set up by the government has recommended the adding of 444 more deaths to the state’s tally after it found that several deaths were not accounted for. This raises questions about the government’s real intentions and begs the question: Was the Tamil Nadu government intentionally hiding these numbers?
An India Today exposé into the matter had forced the Coronavirus death reconciliation committee to sift through data of 102 hospitals in Chennai and crosscheck it with figures from cremation centres and burial grounds across the city. The government now claims that the newly-added deaths were of those who had tested positive posthumously. A result of this is that Tamil Nadu government has decided to make the death reconciliation committee permanent for the time being.
