Pune has now gone on to become the biggest COVID-19 hotspot in India, with cases from the city spiralling out of control. It has been recording twice as many cases as Mumbai every day, even while its population is almost half of that of the metropolis. This Monday, Pune reported 2,601 new coronavirus cases in just 24 hours. It has now surpassed Thane to become the biggest Coronavirus hotspot in the country, a distinction no city on the world would be proud of.

The city has experienced its highest single-day surge. Pune’s death toll also rose to 1,387, with 44 more patients succumbing to the infection. As for the number of people who were discharged after having recovered, it stood at 830. The health infrastructure of the city is being severely tested at the moment with reports of shortages of ICUs and regular beds coming in. Pune is under another lockdown that is supposed to last until July 23.
