The World Health Organisation (WHO) Emergencies Chief Director, Dr Michael Ryan, said in a virtual press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, “It is possible that COVID-19 will become an endemic like HIV (AIDS).” It is a warning that Coronavirus may never go away and that people will have to learn to live with it. He says that only an effective immunisation drive can end this pandemic. He added, “However, it will take a massive effort to develop a Coronavirus vaccine.” He warned that without a vaccine, it could take years for the population to build herd immunity.

Michael Ryan is quoted as saying, “This virus may become just another endemic virus in our community. And this virus may never go away. HIV has not gone away but we have come to terms with the virus, and we have found the therapies and preventive measures. Now, people don’t feel as scared as they did before.”
